It's a sad state of affairs, but there's always much excitement over even the most incremental Android updates. They're a rarity in some cases, but thankfully Motorola and Sony aren't holding out.
Last week, Verizon announced via Twitter that it will begin rolling out the Android 4.4 KitKat update this week to the Moto X's brethren, the Droid Ultra, Droid MAXX, and Droid Mini. The update includes some of KitKat's new features, including full-screen mode for some apps, emoji support, closed captioning for supported videos, and what Verizon refers to as "smarter power use." The trio of handsets will also see Hangouts become the default SMS and MMS app, along with some enhancements to the camera app, like noise reduction in low-light situations and touch-to-focus.
Sony also announced that it will push out an Android update to its family of Xperia Z devices. The Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, and Xperia Tablet Z will all receive Android 4.3 Jelly Bean in the coming days. The update will feature the software's minor enhancements, like UI optimization and what Sony refers to as a "smoother graphical experience," in addition to a heaping of updates for Sony-specific features.
Sony will bundle its Sony Smart Social Cam with the Jelly Bean update, which lets users download "Xperia camera apps" from a designated area of the Google Play store. The update will also include updates to Sony's entire native applications portfolio, including apps like Small apps, Messaging, and Sony Select, as well as the Walkman music app. Sony will also include new themes for the Xperia UI, and a new version of Battery Stamina mode, which brings more options to help prolong battery life. Xperia Tablet Z users will also finally be able to take advantage of restricted user profiles.
