Seth Meyers is, as they say in Hollywood, a busy guy. He's leaving SNL to take over for Jimmy Fallon on Late Night in the fall, but he's also doing a little moonlighting as co-creator, co-star, and co-executive producer of Hulu's first original animated series, The Awesomes. (The other main person involved is Michael Shoemaker, producer of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.) Meyers also is tapping some of his former and current SNL cohorts to come along for the ride.
The Awesomes, which premieres Thursday with its first two of 10 episodes on Hulu, is about what happens when the founder and leader of the "greatest superhero team in history" decides to retire, and his son Jeremy aka Professor Doctor Awesome aka Prock (voiced by Meyers) tries to carry on the family tradition. (He has PhDs, as well as legal and medical degrees to his name.)
The rest of the group includes idiotic Muscleman, redneck Frantic (SNL's Terran Killam), old-timer Gadget Gal (SNL writer Paula Pell), mom-obsessed The Impressario (SNL's Kenan Thompson), and The Awesomes' arch-enemy Dr. Malocchio (SNL's Bill Hader), to name a few.
While Netflix has been leading the way with original streaming series that include House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, and the reborn Arrested Development, Hulu's original programming hasn't made many waves so far. Even with the names associated with The Awesomes, I'm not sure the show will do a lot more to help Hulu.
