The sordid saga of how Twitter turned from a fledgling status updater to a full-blown social network is coming to the small screen. New York Times reporter Nick Bilton's Hatching Twitter has been optioned by Lionsgate Television.

Bilton will write the screenplay for the TV series and The Hunger Games producer Allison Shearmur will lead the show's development.

"Hatching Twitter will go behind the scenes of a groundbreaking Silicon Valley company in a way that's never been captured before on television," Shearmur said in a statement. "The Social Network was a perfect film, and this series will be different, providing a longer view of the work-life changes, gamesmanship, and personal sacrifices made by a group of individuals who are building a company that will change the way that people communicate."

Bilton's behind-the-scenes look at the four guys who founded Twitter has some juicy moments—I recapped my 10 favorite scenes here—but it's difficult to say how those will play out in serial drama form. But Lionsgate is behind hits like Orange Is the New Black and Mad Men, so have a little faith.
