A car safety performance program rated eight different models of cars on their abilities to avoid accidents by autonomously applying the brakes. In this video, report, we'll look at the results of that testing conducted by Euro NCAP, a car safety performance program backed by the European Commission.
The tests involved eight different models, ranging from a E class Mercedes to a Ford Focus, and featured two different settings, city and inter-urban.
In the city tests, the cars approach a barrier at various rates of speed. The Mercedes Benz E250 CDI passed all of the tests and avoided collisions with its Pre-Safe Brake system. All other cars hit at least one of the barriers, though some systems mitigated the impact speed. On the other hand, the Fiat 500 L performed the worst of the set of cars. At 30 km/h, the Fiat's city brake control didn't slow the car at all.
