Yesterday's Twitter for Android tablet update reminded us that there actually aren't that many tablet apps available in the Google Play store. Those that do exist are buried under other categories, and even then there is no way to differentiate between which apps are actually tablet optimized and which are meant for your phone.
The Google Play team is aware of this and have thus announced a change coming to the Google Play store to help curb this issue. The update will go live on November 21 and will ensure that all tablet users will see the "Designed for tablets" tab as the default view in the Play store. This way, you'll be immediately directed to the apps designed specifically for your 7- or 10-inch device.
Google originally announced the designated "Designed for tablets" section earlier this year at its annual I/O developer conference, but it didn't exactly work as advertised. You'd have to do things like rely on the good graces of the Google Play store's search function to surface the app you were looking for, or investigate the included screenshots on the app's description page to make sure you were downloading the right thing.
Good for devs, too
Beyond the consumer benefits, the search giant reminds developers that it offers a handy "to do list" for developing tablet-optimized apps.
