The UK Department of Transport is the latest government transportation agency around the globe expressing concern about the potential for distraction that could result from using Google Glass while driving. The British agency has taken preemptive action to block the device ahead of its public release next year.
The Google Glass spectacles include a small screen that can be used to deliver directions, social media streams, and web pages just above the right eye. The wearable computer allows wearers to take a picture, record a video, and read messages.
However, the UK agency claims that Google Glass has no place on the UK's roads as it will be a dangerous distraction for drivers.
"We are aware of the impending rollout of Google Glass and are in discussion with the Police to ensure that individuals do not use this technology while driving," a Department for Transport spokesperson told Techworld. "It is important that drivers give their full attention to the road when they are behind the wheel and do not behave in a way that stops them from observing what is happening on the road," the representative said. "A range of offenses and penalties already exist to tackle those drivers who do not pay proper attention to the road including careless driving, which will become a fixed penalty offense later this year."
