According to the latest research from Gartner, smartphone sales have surpassed feature phone sales for the first time, with smartphones accounting for 51.8 percent of all mobile phone sales in the second quarter of 2013.
Worldwide smartphone sales to end users reached 225 million units during the second quarter, marking a 46.5 percent increase over the same period last year, Gartner said. Sales of feature phones, meanwhile totaled 210 million units, showing a year-over-year decline of 21 percent.
Mobile phone sales in general totaled 435 million units during the second quarter, showing an increase of 3.6 percent on the same period last year, Gartner added.
Smartphone sales grew in every region, but the highest growth was seen in Asia/Pacific, which posted a smartphone growth rate of 74.1 percent. Following were Latin America at 55.7 percent and and Eastern Europe, at 31.6 percent.
