Fireworks are a cool mix of pyrotechnics and chemistry, but this experiment just about tops any explosion I've ever seen. Apparently lighting a pile of Mercury(II) thiocyanate Hg(SCN)2 and Ammonium chromate (NH4)2CrO4 starts off a reaction that looks almost like a volcano—and that's before the brimstone tentacles start spewing out.
Remember, kids: Science is cool—and a little scary sometimes.
